“Sideshow” is an example of how small details can memorably characterize a world in a piece of flash fiction. Renee Carter Hall does an excellent job of hinting at the history of the story world while giving the protagonist just enough room to grow throughout the events of the tale. Peter Katt does a fine job of hinting at the interpersonal relationships through deft manipulation of voices.
“Cover of Darkness†implies a dark and foreboding world of mystery and danger while providing a light in the darkness for the characters to shine. The focus on the closeness of one personal moment shows how much can be achieved in a short amount of interaction. Excellent stories.
